
From the 709-meter summit of Corcovado, the giant statue of Christ overlooks the city with a docile look and is almost as commonly known as the distinctive form of Sugarloaf as a symbol of Rio. This symbol of Christianity is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, claiming the second spot after the Great Wall of China. The stature of reinforced concrete and soapstone is 30 meters tall with arms stretching 28 meters; it weighs 635 metric tons. There is a chapel inside its base, where it is not unusual to find weddings and baptisms taking place.
