Persian Gulf, also known as Arabian Gulf, is an Indian Ocean extension located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.
The east coast of the Gulf is situated in Iran which was previously known as Persia. This Gulf is a strategically important area where many conflicts took place. It was a battlefield of Iran-Iraq war in the years 1980 to 1988. The Gulf War of 1991 also took place in the Persian Gulf. The Gulf is a great source of fishes, reefs and pearl oysters. Its ecology has been deteriorating due to oil spills and rapid industrialization.
